When guitar star Les Paul sound down with Gibson in the early 1950s to devise the revolutionary instrument that would carry his name, he envisioned two versions of the Les Paul Model: a “standard” version with gold top finish and nickel-plated hardware, and a Custom model that would be the crème de la crème. This Les Paul Custom would be dressed in formal wear, like the tux a jazz artist might pull on for a major performance, with a high-gloss Ebony black finish, multi-ply binding on body and headstock, an ebony fingerboard with pearl block markers, a larger headstock with mother-of-pearl split-diamond inlay, and gold-plated hardware throughout. As busy as Gibson was getting its debut solidbody electric guitar into production, the Goldtop was the first model out of the box in 1952, with the Custom on the back burner for further development. With the Goldtop off and running and gathering fans fast, Gibson turned its attention to designing the Les Paul Custom in 1953, planning for a release the following year, and prepared to make it something special. The stripped-down ethos and outward simplicity of the Sully Erna Godsmack Les Paul belies a powerful sonic punch lurking within. It’s single ’57 Classic Plus pickup yields everything from bone-breaking crunch to eviscerating leads when used on its own, but just pop the push-pull switch on the tone control to unleash the built-in flanger circuit for instant Godsmack atmospherics. Adding further drama to your playing, the toggle-switch on this single-pickup Les Paul is actually kill switch to mute the guitar’s output for rhythmic stutter effects.

The Harrison-Clapton 1957 Les Paul Standard "Lucy" has been painstakingly recreated by Gibson Custom through intimate examination of the original, thanks to the generous cooperation of the George Harrison estate. Notable details include a plain-maple top with off-center seam (a feature of many '50s Goldtops) now visible through its transparent Cherry Red finish; a one-piece lightweight mahogany body; a nylon nut; and two Custom Buckers with lesser-seen Alnico III magnets, wound to closely match the specs and tone of Lucy's original 1957 PAF pickups. The playing feel of this legendary Les Paul is further retained in Lucy's neck profile, a full, rounded '50s shape that measures 0.907" at the 1st fret and 0.980" at the 12th, which has been taking from precise measurement of the original. Telltale modifications that Lucy received over the years—a set of nickel Grover™ kidney button tuners and a replacement '70s truss-rod cover engraved "Custom"—complete this stunningly accurate recreation.

The 1960 Les Paul Reissue from Gibson Custom is an accurate recreation of this truly classic and timeless instrument. It stays true to all of the original instrument’s features and characteristics, including Gibson’s traditional hand-carved “figured” maple top and solid, and non-weight relieved mahogany body. The headstock is made from Holly head veneer, as opposed to fiber, just like it was in 1960, and the vintage-style tulip tuners are mounted in a straight line, also as they were on the original. The 24 ¾-inch scale length neck is made from one solid piece of mahogany, and attached to the body using a long neck tenon — one of the Les Paul’s more distinguishing characteristics of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The neck is topped by a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard outfitted with acrylic trapezoid inlays matching the size and color of the originals. Of course, two of Gibson’s legendary Burstbucker pickups deliver all the subtle variations of true, classic “Patent Applied For” humbucker tone by using historically “unmatched” bobbin windings and Alnico II magnets. Other historical appointments include CTS potentiometers, bumble bee capacitors, single-ply crème-colored binding on both the top and fingerboard, a period-correct thin toggleswitch washer and jackplate, and ABR-1 bridge with lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece. The 1960 Les Paul Standard comes with the standard Gibson Custom case and certificate of authenticity.
Gibson 1968 Les Paul Collectors Choice No10 Tom Scholz
Gibson Custom's Collector's Choice™ series is devoted to painstaking replication of choice original vintage Les Pauls. As a result, these guitars bring players and collectors closer to owning a specific, existing vintage Les Paul than would likely happen in their lifetime. While many of these are guitars exist mainly in the confines of acclaimed collections, the latest in the series is a genuine part of rock history—its tone will already be known to most readers from several of the biggest hit songs of the late '70s.
Collector's Choice™ #10 Tom Scholz 1968 Les Paul recreates this stripped-down and hotrodded '68 Goldtop just as it was used by Scholz, guitarist of the legendary rock band Boston, to create the band's greatest moments, notably on their debut album, Boston. As the first replica of an original vintage guitar outside of the '59-'60 burst, Gibson Custom couldn't have asked for a more compelling model.
Gibson Custom studied every curve, output measurement, ding and scratch of the original guitar, with close cooperation from Tom Scholz himself. The final results are represented in a strictly limited run with a maximum production of 300 guitars. As an accomplished sound engineer, MIT graduate, inventor, and holder of dozens of electronic patents, Scholz—not surprisingly—modified the original guitar extensively. Prior to the recording of the first Boston album he stripped the gold finish down to the natural maple, and added a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucking pickup in the bridge position, while retaining the guitar's original P-90 in the neck position. He also replaced the original Klusons™ with the Schaller™ M6 tuners that were popular at the time.
Along with these accurately reproduced player modifications, the Collector's Choice™ #10 Tom Scholz 1968 Les Paul also features the 14-degree headstock pitch and cream binding that widens with the edge of the maple top in the cutaway, both period-correct details of the late-'60s Les Paul Standard. In addition, Collector's Choice™ #10 guitars also benefit from Gibson Custom's 20th Anniversary Historic Specifications, which bring the Custom Shop reproductions closer to the real thing than ever before. These specifications, introduced for 2013, include a single-layer rosewood fingerboard, hot hide glue neck joint, accurate fingerboard and body binding color, and historically accurate truss rod assembly.
In keeping with the original 1968 Les Paul, the Collector's Choice™ #10 Tom Scholz 1968 Les Paul has a body of solid, unchambered Grade-A mahogany with a two-piece top of selected plain maple, stripped of the Goldtop finish it would have originally worn. The top is now finished in Antique Natural while the back, neck and sides are walnut, all in hand-aged nitrocellulose lacquer. The one-piece mahogany neck is carved to the precise profile taken from Tom Scholz's original guitar, a full shape with plenty of "cheek."
True to the original instrument, the Collector's Choice™ #10 Tom Scholz 1968 Les Paul carries an ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge and lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece, along with gold Top Hat knobs with silver inserts and a nylon 6/6 nut (cut on Gibson's PLEK for utmost accuracy). The guitar comes with no pickguard installed, but the mounting screw holes have been drilled, as on the original guitar.
