Nirvana's studio-albums worden gekenmerkd door doordringende elektrische gitaren, distortion, scherpe vocalen en een muzikale verandering die uitgaat van woede, pijn en loutering. Daarom was het best een verrassing voor de fans en critici, toen ze besloten om unplugged akoestisch op te treden voor de MTV serie in 1994. Die enorme optredens dragen bij aan de scherpte van deze opname, en door velen wordt dit beschouwd als de beste Unplugged set, omdat hij zo breed aanspreekt en opnieuw de kracht van Kurt's songwriting bevestigt.
